These sounds can be adjusted and tweaked with a whole host of studio effects so the user can tailor the sound to their exact needs. Users can also upload up to 1000 of their own samples with the addition of the 700+ internal sounds. The DTX-PROX also has 10 outputs suitable for all recording and live situations as well as other features aimed directly at professional level players.

Unique to the DTX-PROX Modules are the Kit Modifier Knobs which allow the user to instantly change the sound of the Kit by adjusting real sampled room Ambience (not just digital Reverb), Kit Compression, and other Effects in real time. Every channel also has EQ, and Transient Adjustment which is usually found in studio software and allows you to change the Attack and Decay of the sound to suit your needs

Yamaha DXT10 DTX-ProX module with multiple outputs and aux-input

    DTX-ProX Individual Output Channels

The DTX-PROX is equipped with 8 individual outputs and a matrix that allows routing to any output. When recording or performing live this routing capability is perfect for complete control over the sound and balance of the individual drums.

    AUX Inputs

The DTX-PROX Drum Module has 2 AUX inputs, one on the back panel (6.35mm) and one on the front panel (3.5mm). All stereo Jacks can be routed to different locations or outputs depending on the module. They can be used by the drummer as a monitor mix output or can be routed to just the headphones

Yamaha DTX-PROX Module with Bluetooth for audio playback

    Bluetooth connectivity

The Yamaha DTX-PROX is the very first Yamaha Drum Module to have Bluetooth connectivity, this means you can connect it to your smartphone or tablet for audio playback or specialist click apps. It is also possible to record audio direct on the USB port on the module and it will record your drumming as well as audio from Bluetooth and aux-inputs so you can easily record your drum performance over any backing track.

    Brand New DTX Sounds

The sounds for the DTX-PROX Module have been recorded in some of the best studios in Europe. Great care has been taken to record each sound from the initial stick impact to the last usable vibration. As well as the direct microphone sounds from the drums and cymbals themselves, the sounds of the instruments in the studios themselves were also captured. There are more sounds present in the Yamaha DTX-PROX Module than in the DTX-PRO, the resolution of the crash, ride and hi hat samples is also higher, meaning there are more dynamic layers allowing for a more natural playing experience

    Triggering and FX

The DTX10 is much faster to trigger than previous DTX models this makes them feel much more natural to play. The DTX-PRO Module also has 256 polyphony, meaning they can play more notes at the same time.

The transient adjustment adjusts the attack and release of the sound, effectively making the instrument sound closer or farther away depending on the settings. Each channel has compression in addition to the compressor modifier. 31 effects can be assigned to each individual channel making each channel a bit different.

    DTX-10 Kit Modifiers

The Kit modifier knobs are unique to Yamaha. They allows the user to instantly change the sound by affecting the ambience, compression and effects. You can also see how much each modifiers being used and adjust it in real time.

The ambience Modifier works by adding real room ambience onto the kit sound. When the drumkits were recorded they also took the time to record and sample the actual room sound. You can add this natural ambience onto the drum kit by turning the ambience modifier.

The compression modifier works by adding compression onto the whole kit, a small amount of compression can help to bring the whole kit sound together. More compression adds attack and smack to the sound to give it a more aggressive sound.

The effects modifier works by controlling how much you hear the 2 effects processors as well as the master FX. Each pad can send different amounts of signal to either processor meaning each pad can have different effects on it if required.

Yamaha DTX-10KM with Mesh Head technology

    Mesh Heads by Remo

The mesh pads use two-ply heads made by Remo. They boast outstanding noise reduction, durability, and feel when hit, as well as a great rebound, making them superbly comfortable to play. The heads can be tuned to suit your personal preferences. The snare pad is equipped with three sensors that precisely respond to delicate stick work.

    Ride Hit Point detection

The Ride Cymbal On the DTX10 have hit point detection or positional sensing, this means it can sense where on the bow it is being played and adjusts the sound being played accordingly, allowing for a more natural playing experience. this is in addition to the 3 zone sensing - Bell, bow, Edge.

Play Custom Sampled Drum Sound From DTX-Pro Modules

You can load up to 1000 of your own samples into the DTX-PRO and PROX Modules. Each sample can be 16 bit or 24 bit, stereo or mono, and is loaded in from a USB drive DTX-PRO = 32Mb (6min 20secs stereo), DTX-PROX= 256Mb (25min 22secs stereo). But this can all be used for drum and percussion sounds as there are other ways to play/ trigger tracks.

Up to 4 Layers Per Drum With DTX10

Every zone of every pad of the DTX 8 and 10 kits can have 4 layers. Each layer can be an internal sound or a user sample. These sounds can be stacked together or alternated - each time the zone is hit, the next sound in the list is heard. This is a function called Stack/Alt

    User Voices

The DTX-PRO and PROX Modules have a feature called User Voice which works in parallel with Stack/Alt. This means that up to 40 samples can be loaded onto any zone of any pad. These samples can then be set to play at different dynamics. You could load up to 120 samples per pad - 10 layers and 4 repeating samples on each zone.

    Record Via USB

You can also use the DTX-PROX to record yourself playing. You simply select the Recorder function, press Record, and start playing its as easy as that. You can use the module alone as an audio notepad and record for 90 seconds, or alternatively you can plug in a USB drive and record for 90 minutes. This means by attaching a microphone to the Aux In, rehearsals and lesson can be easily recorded.

If you want to record yourself playing along to a track and you do not have a computer to hand, you can simply use the DTX-PRO or PROX.

    Yamaha DTX10 Training Functions

The DTX-PRO and PROX have borrowed the best practice functions from previous DTX models. There are 10 training functions that are ideal for players of all standards, as well as 37 training songs that allow you to learn various genres. Drummers of all levels should find the training functions a useful aid for daily practice.

    Built-In Click

The click on the DTX-PROX is exactly what drummers are after - precise, clear, and easily accessible. It can be routed to just the headphone output for use when other musicians are in earshot or can be routed to any of the other outputs for sending to monitors etc - perfect for live use. You can even import your own click samples if there is a click sound you particularly like to use.

    DTX10 High Fidelity headphone Amplifier

It is incredibly important that drummers can hear themselves clearly, so the new DTX modules comes equipped with a high precision, low distortion, low noise, and high-power headphone amplifier. This circuitry delivers high-fidelity sound directly to the player, and has been developed exclusively for electronic drums. The DTX-PROX has both 6.35mm and 3.5mm headphone outputs for ease of use, whether it is headphones or in ear monitors. The DTXPRO has 6.35mm.

    Rec'N'Share

Rec'n'Share first became known with the EAD10. Now Rec'n'Share works with the DTX8+ and 10 range, meaning it can be used for practice or video making. Rec'n'Share is iOS and Android compatible. The device connects with a USB cable and an adaptor (depending on the device).

    Play, Change Tempo, Add Click

Any track which you have on your device, and which you own a copy of, can be used with Rec'n'Share. Streaming sites such as Spotify and Apple Music cannot be used because of Digital Rights Management (DRM). Rec'n'Share can link to Dropbox for easy access of all your music tracks. Any track in Rec'n'Share can have its tempo changed and have a click added to it. You can also loop sections of the track for better practice sessions.

Rec 'n' Share App - Record Your Performance Sound and Video

As well as recording your playing, the Rec'n'Share App can also be used to record drum videos, by using the audio from the DTX-PRO or PROX, and the video capture of the attached device. Videos can be trimmed and edited, mixes changed, and the final result can be easily shared directly from the app.

    Cubase AI

Every DTX8 and 10 kit comes with a download code to get a copy of Cubase AI, the powerful music production software from Steinberg.

By connecting the DTX-PRO or PROX to your computer with a USB cable, all recording, editing, and mixing tasks that are found in modern music production, can be handled by Cubase.

    Yamaha DTX10K-M Electronic Drumkit Overview

    Yamaha DTX10K-M Electronic Drumkit

    Yamaha DTX10 - Larnell Lewis Hybrid set-up

Review Written By AC Hamilton Drum Specialist Matthew Longshaw

    First Thoughts

"Oh My God they are using Mesh Heads" that was honestly the first thing I said upon seeing the first video that Yamaha Uploaded of the brand new Flagship Yamaha DTX10K-M electronic drumkit. My second sentence was "WOW this kit looks amazing", the wooden shells that Yamaha have used on the brand new DTX10 kits really give this kit a great look and the fact that they are also made of proper birch gives the DTX10 an air of class that you just don't see from a lot of other electronic drum manufactures.

My third sentence was "Okay Great but what does it sound like", I can tell you now that I was not disappointed with the sound what so ever. The new DTX-PROX module really puts in a lot of work and you can really see that Yamaha have spent a lot of time making sure that this module is easy to navigate, easy to make internal changes and easy overall to use.

    Bigger drum Pad sizes

so as some of you will know, Yamaha also released the DTX8 series of electronic drum kits as well, which I have also reviewed on the website and honestly I think they are fantastic, one of the short comings of the DTX8 was the bass drum, in my opinion it was just a little lacking on the looks department. Well I can inform you all that I have no such worries on the DTX10, it looks so much better with the improved KP128 12 inch mesh pad, I also love the fact that on the front of the kick drum there is a little port hole which honestly doesn't do anything to my knowledge but it just looks cool and that is something I know drummers will appreciate, something looking cool.

While we are talking about drum Pads, Yamaha did in fact up the size of the floor tom pad from 10 inch to 12 inch and they also increased the size of the crash and ride so now on the DTX10 you actually get a 17 inch ride and 15 inch main crash which is just fantastic as the bigger cymbal pads will add to the overall feel of the drumkit. The 17 inch ride also has positional sensing which is a great feature and really allows you to be dynamic and also gives you a lot more scope of sound.

    The Hardware

What can I actually say about Yamaha Hardware. it's Honestly some of the most solid hardware in the drumming world right now and its also some o the most versatile hardware as well allowing you to place thing pretty much where you want it and still retains a stable footing. The Hardware you get with the DTX10 is absolutely amazing because not only do you get the HEX Rack which in my opinion is the most solid rack on the market today but you also get a free Yamaha Snare Stand and Hi Hat Stand. Now this is such a good addition to the whole package because not a lot if any electronic drum company actually give snare and hi hat stands so this is amazing value

Lets Talk about the HEX Rack. So with the DTX10 you get a full Hex Rack system to mount your DTX10 pads and cymbals onto now through my experience with the HEX Rack it is honestly one of the most versatile and sturdy rack systems on the market today. As soon as you lock things into place that's it nothing moves at all.

    DTX-PROX Module

Considering I haven't actually had any hands on experience with the DTX-PROX Module there is only so much I have to go off so we i actually have this to mess with I will be updating this review to let you know my thoughts on this module. One thing you have to remember About Yamaha when it comes to their electronic drums is that Yamaha know how to make Acoustic Drum Kits, They know how to record Acoustic Drumkits, they have a near endless amount of technology that they can use for whatever reason they need to and they have so many technical experts who research and design these things so they are the absolute best they can be. In short they know what they are doing.

So considering all this I am very optimistic that this module will be Yamaha's most powerful one to date. From what I have seen so far the acoustic sounds in the Module are very acoustic sounding which is what you want of course, sometimes I find on other electronic drums the "acoustic sounds" still sound very processed which sort of defeats the point in my opinion. The way the DTX-PROX module is set out is something I like quite a lot, with the kit modifier knobs and the individual channel faders makes this module very easy to navigate and get things to sound exactly how you want them to without having to do loads of menu hoping and extra button pressing so I like that a lot.

    The Main Competitors

Who is the DTX10 going to be going up against? Well the other biggest electronic drum company in the world right now is Roland so lets use them just as a ball park comparison. The closest comparison in my opinion would be the VAD506, now I will admit that the Roland VAD506 does look better than the DTX10 but it is a lot closer now compared to the DTX8 what with the bigger pads, the addition of the HEX rack adds a new layer to the looks of the DTX10 but when compared to the VAD506 on looks I think the DTX10 does lack in that department. When compared to the rest of the Roland Range the DTX10 does hold up quite well except against the VAD706 but when you are spending double the money I would hope it would look twice as good.

The Big advantage that Roland Has is the Digital Snare and ride that you get with the TD-27KV and Roland VAD500 series with the added Digital Hi-Hats that you can get on the TD-50K2 and VAD700 series, now while this is great and they are good I would argue that given the DTX10 has a positional sensing ride along with the 12" snare pad with three internal sensors that you honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them that much, except when you go up to the TD-50 but again when you start spending double the money you expect some major differences, although in my opinion the DTX10 looks better than the TD-50.

When you start comparing the Sounds of both companies that's when things get a bit trickier, I have experience with the Roland and while I can tell you they do sound amazing, they do sometimes leave a little to be desired, this could be because half the time your not 100% on what kits you playing because Roland doesn't tell you the brands they record. With Yamaha you know exactly what kits your getting because they are all Yamaha drum kits so your almost listening with your eyes as well as your ears so you put on the recording custom drum kit you know what this is and you have an idea of what your listening for which I think is great that I actually know what kits I'm getting

    Final Thoughts

My Final Thoughts on the DTX10 consist of a few main points really which in my opinion put it ahead of most of the competition, my first point is that when compared with most E-kits on the market today the DTX10 trumps it in terms of looks plus the possibility of more finishes from Yamaha is a very exciting concept.

The second point is overall quality. Yamaha are know for their outstanding build quality and the team that Yamaha have if there are any issues will ensure that you feel comfortable in your purchase and as a customer. time and time again I see electronic drums that make loads of promises and fail to deliver on the quality front so I am very confident that Yamaha will excel in this area.

My third and final point is overall value. when compared to lets say the equivalent Roland you substantially more for your money mainly because you have to buy less in order to actually use the drum kit which in my opinion makes a lot of difference there is nothing worse than getting excited about buying a brand new drum kit only to find that you didn't buy enough to actually use it. At least with the DTX you only have to buy two extra things instead of four extra things. All in all i think the DTX is gonna be a serious contender for the top spot of best electronic Drumkit on the market today and i shall be keeping my eyes pealed for what Yamaha come up with next
