Choosing a baby grand is usually a once in a lifetime experience. If you get it right youll have an instrument for life that youll grow to appreciate more over the years and youll likely think it was the best investment you ever made.
Nowadays the critical assessment of any purchase is the price. its important to remember that its value for money that is more important.
Baby Grands can be purchased for as little as £5500.00. The Kawai Baby Grand is £2000 more but this is easily justifyable. Firstly each note is in sympathy with all other notes, there are no queer notes that sound as if they belong on another piano. Kawai is a hi quality brand and will always have a much higher resale value than a Chinese branded instrument.
I rang our Kawai Rep when we received the Kawai GM10 baby grand in stock and thanked him. Every pianist who works in our shop loved the sound, its so warm but vibrant. He told me that they have a senior technician who has moved from the factory to this country and whos job is to voice each and every baby grand piano to perfection. This is why we can hear the difference in a Kawai Baby Grand.
The famous institutions that have recently purchased Kawai include -
- Guildhall School of Music & Drama
- Trinity College
- Royal College of Music
- Purcell School
- Yehudi Menuhin School
- Pineapple Dance Studios
Measuring 150cm in length, the GM-10 baby grand offers the same attention to detail and quality found in Kawais larger pianos - in a petite size to fit any room. The action design and components are comparable to those in our GE and RX Series pianos to provide outstanding touch and playability. With its resonant tone and classic good looks, the GM-10 will be an impressive addition to any home.
Exclusive Ultra-Responsive ActionKawais "Ultra-Responsive Action" stands alone in providing the finest combination of strength, stability, precision and reliability. Hammer heads are made with 100% premium wool felt. To make the action resistant to climatic and seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, we pioneered the use of aluminium action rails, aluminium hammer rest rails and precision parts made of extremely stable, low-friction ABS Styran.
Full Sostenuto PedalUnlike many baby grands that have only a bass sustain pedal, the GM-10 Grand allows you to sustain the first played notes, then play staccato over the rest of the keyboard. This is a function normally found only on larger grands. Steel reinforced, Anti-Warp Keyslip The GM and GE Series keyslips are reinforced with a heavy-guage steel inside liner that prevents warping or bending in any direction. Keys move freely with virtually no possibility of rubbing or sticking against the inside of the keyslip. Steel reinforced Keybed The GM and GE Series keybeds are made of extremely strong, laminated hardwoods. Kawai also reinforces each keybed with an underside steel support beam for maximum stability.
Laminated beams of Matoa All GM and GE Series beams are made of Matoa, one of the world's hardest woods. Our cross-banded LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) construction method creates beams that are many times stronger and more durable than beams made of solid wood. Multi-Laminate PinblockGM and GE Series pinblocks are laminated with a minimum of 11 cross-banded layers of hard rock maple. Lamination provides more strength, greater pressure and more balanced torque on the tuning pins for superior tuning stability.

The Kawai Guide to choosing a quality piano
Tone
Tone is the rich, resonant sound quality that emanates from a well-crafted piano. A fine instrument should be capable of providing exceptional tone through the full range of musical expression... powerful, delicate, short, long, fast, or slow. Whatever the dynamic requirement, the piano must respond with clear and expressive tone that reflects the players intentions. Superb tone is the first hallmark of a fine Kawai grand piano.
Selection of the finest woods
Kawai craftsmen use all the senses... smell, sight, touch, and sound... in the selection of wood. But it is only their "sixth sense"honed by years of experience that results in the final selection of wood worthy of a Kawai grand piano.
Solid spruce soundboards
The soundboard is the very heart of the pianos tone. Sensibility and its strength. Today, virtually all of the worlds finest concert grand pianos possess a soundboard made of solid spruce. Only straight-grained, quarter-sawn spruce is chosen for all Kawai grand piano soundboards. Kawai employs state-of-the-art equipment to measure the speed at which sound energy travels across a soundboard.
Full length ribs
Kawais spruce ribs span the full length of the soundboard. Kawai engineers have devised a technique for strategically placing ribs in order to direct sound energy to the most responsive areas of the soundboard. This helps balance bass and treble and enhances both power and tone quality.
The Kawai "CORE" system
CORE is an acronym representing "Convergence for Optimum Reflected Energy". This convergence refers to the way the pianos "strength centers" focus toward one central point of the pianos structure. The rim, plate and three underside beams all converge toward a metal connector at the heart of the piano.
The resulting structural focus creates incredible strength as these converging strength centers, now joined and working as "one", provide a solid core foundation that maximizes the reflective capabilities of the rim. Greater power, longer sustain and more resonant tone made possible by optimum reflected energy.
The bridges
Bridges transfer the vibrations of the strings to the soundboard. All Kawai bass bridges are made of the highest quality hard maple or beech. Treble bridges consist of 13 vertical layers of hard maple and mahogany for maximum strength and optimal transfer of sound. The RX-6 and RX-7 feature a single, continuous bridge which enables a smooth transition between bass and treble registers.
